Review by Sue Bryant, Sunday Times cruise editor
Sapphire Princess is one of two Princess Cruises ships sailing out of the UK in 2018. It was refurbished in 2012, and offers a generous array of restaurants, bars and entertainment options over 16 passenger decks.
Although Sapphire is big in cruising terms, it has plenty of quiet places with a 'small ship' feel, not least pretty Vines wine bar, the lovely Wake View Bar behind the dining room on Deck 6 and the adults-only Sanctuary, a luxurious haven on deck with big, padded loungers and plenty of shade.
Look & Feel
This is a big, buzzing ship with plenty going on and some
stylish touches, not least the attractive Piazza, the central
atrium, which has a constant hum of activity.
True, Sapphire doesn't have the vast array of restaurants and gimmicks of its younger sister, Royal Princess, which also sails from Southampton, but the prices reflect that. Expect the company of Brits, other Europeans and Americans in summer and in winter, when the ship sails in Southeast Asia, mainly Asians and some Australians.
Service & Facilities
Service is friendly and professional, with enthusiastic youth staff in the kids' clubs. Tips are not included.
- Hot tubs
- Spa & gym
- 5 pools
- Adults-only sunbathing area
- Children's clubs
- Sports court
- Shops and art gallery
- Outdoor cinemae
There are multiple cabin grades - all have a bathroom with
shower, flat-screen TV, fridge, hairdryer and free room service.
The décor is mainly blue, cream and tan.
Inside cabins: From 158 sq ft and perfectly acceptable.
Outside cabins: From 148 sq ft with a picture window.
Balcony cabins: From 214 sq ft including a balcony with two chairs and a small table.
Suites: From 460 to 932 sq ft, with mini bar, access to the spa's thermal suite, priority reservations, free laundry and one meal in a speciality restaurant.
Food & Drink
Sapphire Princess offers several included dining venues and a
few extra places where you pay a fee for more intimate
surroundings. In the main dining room, there's a choice between
assigned seating and fixed dinner times or Anytime Dining, for
which you turn up when you want to. Passengers in the new Club
Class suites and above have their own area of the dining room and
an extended menu.
Look out for new dishes by American celebrity chef Curtis Stone. A partnership with chocolatier Norman Love means gourmet chocolate appears on menus throughout the ship.
Sapphire Princess does have some very competitive cruise prices but be aware that drinks, tips and speciality dining are not included. But the entertainment is very good, and costs nothing, and the included restaurants are of a high standard relative to some other lines.
